CRANSTON, R.I. — Former Cranston Mayor Allan Fung has officially filed paperwork to run as an independent candidate for Rhode Island House District 15.
When asked why he decided to run, Fung said, “I don’t like what I’m seeing.”
He served three terms as mayor of Cranston and was the Republican nominee for governor in 2014 and 2018.
The seat was previously held by his wife, Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung, who defeated then-House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello in 2020, marking the first time in 114 years that a sitting Rhode Island House Speaker lost reelection.
Fung will face current State Representative Chris Paplauskas, who won the District 15 seat in the last election by 22 votes over Maria Bucci.
The matchup is expected to be one of Rhode Island’s most closely watched State House races this election season.
