PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A suspect in a murder in the Dominican Republic failed to surrender this week after his release from federal detention in Rhode Island and later being ordered back into custody.
The case has drawn attention after federal officials acknowledged that key details were not provided to the U.S. District Judge Melissa R. DuBose before her decision to release the man was made. Prosecutors later admitted they did not disclose that the man, Bryan Rafael Gómez, was wanted overseas in connection with a homicide investigation.
Gómez had been taken into custody by immigration authorities earlier this year. However, a federal judge later ordered his release while legal proceedings continued.
The decision quickly became the center of controversy after federal officials publicly criticized the judge’s ruling. Questions intensified after court filings revealed that information tied to the international murder allegation was not shared during the hearing.
Federal officials later said the information was withheld because authorization to disclose details related to the overseas warrant had not yet been finalized.
