GLOCESTER, R.I. — A former Ponaganset High School teacher has pleaded not guilty to sexual assault charges during her first court appearance.
Alisha Crins, 39, was arraigned Wednesday on two counts of third-degree sexual assault.
Allegations tied to former student
The charges stem from a complaint filed by a former student who graduated last spring.
According to investigators, the student reported that Crins began sending flirtatious messages that later became explicit after he turned 18.
He also alleged she invited him to her home and kissed him during his junior year.
Teacher responded to investigators
Police said Crins acknowledged sending photos but denied any sexual relationship.
She told investigators that the two were not physical beyond a single kiss.
Investigation began last year
The case began in October when the student filed a complaint with the Rhode Island State Police, prompting a criminal investigation.
Crins has since resigned from her teaching position and is no longer employed by the school district.
Bail and court restrictions set
A judge set bail at $10,000 with surety.
Crins was ordered to surrender her passport and have no contact with the alleged victim.
She is also prohibited from being alone with anyone under the age of 16 unless supervised, except for her own children.
Next court date scheduled
Crins is scheduled to return to court on May 13 for a pre-trial conference.
She declined to comment when leaving the courthouse.
