PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A suspect in a 2017 murder in Providence has been captured in Guatemala, nearly a decade after the killing.
Authorities say John E. Nunez, 36, was taken into custody Tuesday in connection with the death of 22-year-old Devin Burney.
Arrest follows years-long investigation
Burney was shot on July 1, 2017, while leaving Noah Lounge on Broad Street, according to investigators.
Police say Nunez fled the United States shortly after the shooting and used false identification to avoid capture.
The case remained open for years as authorities continued to track his whereabouts.
Break in the case led to arrest
Officials said new information received about a year and a half ago helped investigators locate Nunez in Guatemala.
The arrest was carried out with assistance from the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force, U.S. Marshals, and Providence Police Department.
Awaiting extradition
Nunez is currently being held by authorities in Guatemala until he is extradited back to Rhode Island.
Officials emphasize long reach of justice
Law enforcement officials said the arrest highlights their continued efforts to pursue suspects, even years after a crime.
They noted that leaving the country does not prevent investigators from continuing to build a case.
