CRANSTON, R.I. — More than six months after the Newport Creamery at Garden City Center in Cranston served its final Awful Awful, the property appears to be entering its next chapter.
The iconic restaurant officially closed in December after more than 60 years in business, ending a run that made it one of Garden City’s most recognizable landmarks. This week, construction activity, detours, and work crews could be seen around the former restaurant, leading many to speculate that demolition of the building may be approaching.
Adding to the intrigue, rumors have continued to circulate that an Apple Store could eventually take over the site. While no official announcement has been made, the possibility has generated plenty of discussion among Rhode Islanders eager to see what comes next for one of the most prominent corners of Garden City.
For decades, the Newport Creamery sign welcomed generations of customers. Now, with construction underway and the future of the property still uncertain, many are watching closely to see what replaces a true Rhode Island institution.
