PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Baba’s Original New York System, a Providence staple known for its famous hot wieners since first opening in 1927, will permanently close on October 31 after years of financial struggles.
Located in the Smith Hill neighborhood, the eatery was taken over in 2016 by Taner “Baba” Toprak. His family announced the decision to shut down the business in a social media post on October 3.
In a post on social media the restaurant announced:
“To Our Valued Customers and Community,
It is with deep gratitude and heavy hearts that we announce the upcoming closure of Baba’s Original New York System. After proudly serving Providence for almost a decade, we have made the very difficult decision to close our doors.
Our final day of service will be Friday, October 31st, 2025.
The Original New York System was founded in 1927 and has been a cornerstone of Rhode Island’s food culture for nearly a century. When Baba’s took over in 2016, our mission was to honor that history and to carry on the tradition, preserve the flavors, and continue the legacy that generations before us built.
For the past 9 years, it has been our greatest honor to share meals, memories, and traditions with you. This decision was not made lightly, but it comes with immense appreciation for the unwavering support you have shown us throughout the years.
We warmly invite you to visit us one last time before we close, to enjoy the food and community that have defined Baba’s since the beginning.
From our family to yours, thank you for allowing us to be part of your lives and for making Baba’s more than just a restaurantit has been a home filled with love, laughter, and community.
With love and gratitude,
Baba’s Family”
