Two young great white sharks were tagged off Rhode Island.
The Atlantic Shark Institute has added two more great white sharks to its research program after a successful week on the water in Rhode Island.
Researchers captured, measured, tagged, and released the sharks as part of an ongoing effort to study and protect the species. Both sharks were small in size and displayed a rounded dorsal fin, a feature common among very young white sharks.
Scientists note that female great whites typically don’t reach reproductive age until their 30s, meaning these juveniles are crucial to the long-term recovery of the species. Each new shark tagged helps researchers better understand the population’s growth and migration patterns in local waters.
The work was carried out aboard the Estrella Domar with the help of Captain Carl Granquist and crew member Bryce Briggs, marking another milestone in what the Institute has described as one of its strongest research seasons to date.
