CRANSTON, R.I. — Providence College men’s basketball player Duncan Powell was arrested over the weekend following an alleged domestic incident in Cranston, according to police.
Officers were called to a residence on Plainfield Pike early Saturday morning for a reported disturbance involving Powell. Police say a woman told dispatchers that her friend’s ex-boyfriend was outside the home and believed he had a weapon.
When officers arrived, Powell’s ex-girlfriend told police he had allegedly assaulted her earlier in the day and showed visible bruising. She also reported finding a tracking device attached to her car and said Powell had been attempting to locate her.
A witness at the scene told police that Powell had allegedly made threats toward people inside the home before leaving the area. While officers were still investigating, Powell reportedly began calling the woman repeatedly. One officer answered the phone and later encountered Powell approaching the scene, where he was taken into custody at gunpoint.
Police said no weapon was found on Powell at the time of his arrest, and his vehicle was located nearby.
Powell was arrested on suspicion of domestic disorderly conduct and is expected to be arraigned this morning.
The forward recently completed his senior season with the Friars after transferring from Georgia Tech for the 2025–26 season. He appeared in 22 games, making five starts and averaging 4.6 points.
Earlier this season, Powell was suspended for three games by the Big East following a hard foul on St. John’s guard Bryce Hopkins that sparked an on-court altercation between both teams. Hopkins had previously played at Providence before transferring to St. John’s.
The Friars finished the season 15–18. The program recently parted ways with head coach Kim English and hired Bryan Hodgson as his replacement.
Providence College has not released a statement regarding the incident.
