PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Providence College announced Friday that Kim English will not return as head coach of the Providence Friars men’s basketball team next season, ending his tenure after three years.
Providence Athletic Director Steve Napolillo thanked English and his coaching staff for their work with the team during that time and wished them well moving forward.
Decision comes after Big East Tournament loss
The announcement came less than a day after Providence lost to the St. John’s Red Storm in the quarterfinal round of the Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament.
St. John’s defeated the Friars 85-72 at Madison Square Garden, ending Providence’s conference tournament run.
Friars missed NCAA Tournament during English tenure
Providence has long been known as a program that regularly competes for NCAA Tournament appearances. During English’s tenure, however, the Friars did not qualify for the tournament.
In his first season, Providence finished 21-14 overall with a 10-10 record in Big East play.
The following year proved more challenging. The Friars ended the season 12-20 overall and 6-14 in conference play.
This past season, Providence closed the year with a 15-18 overall record and a 7-13 mark in the Big East.
English hired after Ed Cooley departure
Providence hired English in 2023 after longtime Friars coach Ed Cooley left the program to become head coach of the Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team.
Before arriving at Providence, English served as the head coach of the George Mason Patriots men’s basketball team.
Providence is now in the process of hiring a new head coach.
