PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Providence hit-and-run investigation is underway after a man was struck and killed over the weekend, and police are now asking for the public’s help identifying the vehicle involved.
Officers say the driver did not stop after the crash and the vehicle has not been located.
Victim identified, crash happened early Saturday
Police said officers responded to Corliss Street around 2:30 a.m. Saturday for a report of a man who had been hit by a vehicle and was not breathing.
The victim, identified as 46-year-old Kevin Chappie, was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
Investigators believe he had been waiting for a rideshare and stepped into a crosswalk when he was struck by an oncoming car.
Vehicle description released
Police are searching for a black Chevrolet with alloy wheels, believed to have a Massachusetts license plate.
Detectives were also able to identify a partial plate number: “4 GN.”
Public asked to help identify driver
The Providence Police Department is asking anyone who may recognize the vehicle or has information about the crash to come forward.
