PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island Energy is warning customers about a rise in scam attempts across the state, with individuals posing as company employees to financial or personal information.
Officials say the scams are becoming more sophisticated and often pressure customers to act quickly.
Customers urged to stay cautious
The company is reminding residents not to share personal or financial details unless they can confirm they are speaking with a verified representative.
Verifying real employees
Customers can confirm a Rhode Island Energy employee by asking for the last five digits of their account number.
If the person cannot provide that information, customers should end the conversation immediately.
Rhode Island Energy said it only sends text messages if a customer initiates contact.
How to spot a scam
Rhode Island Energy outlined several warning signs:
• Phone calls claiming urgent account issues
• Messages claiming service will be disconnected, outage alerts
• Requests for payment through unusual methods
• Emails asking users to click suspicious links
• Unexpected visits from people claiming to be utility workers
The company said it does not demand payment on the spot or make unannounced visits.
What to do if targeted
Customers should report suspicious activity to Rhode Island Energy at 1-855-743-1101.
If someone attempts to enter a home or property, residents are urged to contact local police.
