Hundreds of pothole damage claims unresolved as RIDOT has only one employee to process them all

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is facing a backlog of more than 400 pothole damage claims that remain unresolved or are still awaiting review.

Records show the department relies on one employee to handle and process claims from drivers who say their vehicles were damaged by potholes on state roads.

The growing backlog has raised questions about whether the state is using its resources effectively to manage the volume of reports.

Drivers can file claims for pothole damage

Motorists who believe their vehicle was damaged by a pothole on a state maintained road can file a claim with RIDOT seeking compensation for repairs.

Those claims require documentation such as photos of the road damage, a police report, and details about where and when the incident occurred.

After reviewing the information, the state determines whether it is responsible for the damage.

Backlog raises concerns about response time

With hundreds of claims waiting to be processed, drivers will face long delays before receiving a decision, or reimbursement.

The backlog highlights the challenge of managing the claims process with limited staffing.

Potholes remain a frequent issue for drivers

Potholes are a common problem in Rhode Island, particularly after winter storms and freeze thaw cycles that can damage pavement.

Drivers often report tire damage, bent rims, and suspension problems after hitting potholes on heavily traveled roads.
