Man charged after allegedly throwing trash can at motorcycle

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — More than a week after a motorcycle crashed into a crowded outdoor dining area during the Feast of St. Joseph on Federal Hill, Providence police have announced felony charges against a Cumberland man accused of intervening moments before the collision.

Investigators say 35-year-old Robert Maggiacomo allegedly threw a trash can at a motorcycle that was traveling through the festival area on June 6. Police believe the motorcycle operator lost control shortly afterward, crashing into tables and sending people scrambling for safety.

Following an investigation, Maggiacomo was charged with felony assault and/or battery. During his arraignment, a judge ordered him to have no contact with motorcycle operator Michael Carnevale, including through social media. Maggiacomo was released on $10,000 personal recognizance on a promise to keep the peace and exhibit good behavior. He is due back in court on Sept. 14 for a screening.

The rider, identified as 19-year-old Michael Carnevale of Johnston, was also charged following the incident. Police say he was operating the motorcycle without a license, without proof of insurance, and has been charged with reckless driving.

The incident quickly gained attention after video of the crash spread online. Since then, public reaction has been sharply divided.

Some believe Maggiacomo’s actions may have helped stop a motorcycle that was allegedly speeding through a crowded, pedestrian-filled event where vehicles were not supposed to be operating. Others argue that throwing an object at a moving motorcycle created an even greater danger and could have led to a far more serious tragedy.

Providence police ultimately concluded that Maggiacomo’s alleged actions placed both the rider and members of the public at risk, leading to the felony charge.
