PROVIDENCE, R.I. — La Pigna is back up on the Federal Hill arch in Providence after being taken down for restoration last month.
The iconic centerpiece was reinstalled today following a five-week project that included a new 24-karat gold-leaf finish. The approximately $420,000 project focused on restoring and enhancing the gateway arch on Atwells Avenue.
The work included defining the gateway’s architectural elements, including the columns, arch, crowns, and other decorative features. Improvements are also being made to the public space surrounding the arch, including enhanced lighting and new benches.
La Pigna was gilded in 24-karat gold by the same team that restored the Independent Man at the Rhode Island State House.
The project marked the first time the arch had been taken down and restored since its construction in 1981.
La Pigna, which means “the pinecone” in Italian, has long been one of the most recognizable symbols of Federal Hill. Its restoration gives the landmark a fresh appearance while preserving a familiar part of the neighborhood’s identity.
And yes, the longtime pineapple-or-pinecone debate will probably continue.
