PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Roger Williams Park Zoo announced the death of Raff, a 12-year-old golden lion tamarin who had been a longtime resident.
Zoo officials shared the news in a social media post, describing Raff as a key member of the rainforest habitat and a vital part of the tamarin group since arriving in 2018.
Remembering Raff
According to the zoo, Raff played a central role within her group while raising multiple offspring over the years.
She was the mother of Angus, Magnus, Boudicca, Archie, Leopold, twins Colin and Hildreth, and Nora, and the partner of Kyle.
A species at risk
Golden lion tamarins are native to the forests of Brazil and are considered endangered.
Zoos like Roger Williams Park Zoo participate in conservation and education efforts to help protect the species and raise awareness about threats to their natural habitat.
Raff helped visitors learn about rainforest ecosystems and the importance of conservation.
Ongoing care for the group
Animal care staff said they are closely monitoring the remaining tamarins to support their health and adjustment following her loss.
