SMITHFIELD, R.I. — A group of fifth-grade students at Pleasant View Elementary School is seeing their voices make a real impact after writing a letter asking for new soccer nets — and getting results.
The students sent a letter to the school’s Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO), requesting improvements to their recess equipment. Their message didn’t go unnoticed.
PTO responds to student request
In a response shared with the students, the Pleasant View Elementary PTO said it reviewed the request and worked with physical education teachers to find a solution that fits both student needs and the organization’s budget.
“Nets have been purchased and will be presented at our PTO meeting next week,” the PTO wrote.
Students invited to meeting
The PTO also invited the students who signed the letter, along with any others interested, to attend the upcoming meeting.
The meeting is scheduled for April 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria.
A lesson in student advocacy
Eighteen students signed the letter, showing how even younger students can advocate for changes in their school community.
The PTO praised the students for speaking up and engaging in the process.
