PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A new analysis shows just how high the bar is to be considered a top earner in Rhode Island, with households needing to bring in well over a quarter million dollars annually.
According to a study by MoneyLion, a household in Rhode Island must earn about $287,597 per year to rank among the top 10% of earners in the state.
That figure is more than three times the state’s median household income, which sits at about $83,504.
In fact, top earners in Rhode Island make roughly 244% more than the median household, highlighting a significant income gap.
Nationally, the income needed to break into the top 10% typically ranges from about $198,000 to nearly $387,000, depending on the state.
The data underscores how difficult it is to reach the highest income tier in the Ocean State.
Even households earning six figures may still fall short of the top 10%, especially as the cost of living continues to rise.
At the same time, the large gap between median income and top earners reflects broader economic inequality seen across the country.
MoneyLion used data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey to estimate income levels for top earners and compare them to median household income.
