PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island is among the states affected by a nationwide Trader Joe’s food recall involving millions of pounds of frozen products that may be contaminated with glass.
The recall, issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, includes nearly 37 million pounds of ready-to-eat items sold across most of the country.
Glass contamination found in products
The largest portion of the recall involves Trader Joe’s Vegetable Fried Rice.
Manufacturer Ajinomoto Foods North America Inc. recalled about 9.8 million pounds of the product after glass fragments were discovered in the meals.
The pieces were reported to range from 1 to 3 centimeters long.
Investigators traced the issue to a vegetable ingredient, specifically carrots.
Other Trader Joe’s items also recalled
The recall was later expanded to include additional products, such as:
- Trader Joe’s Chicken Shu Mai
- Trader Joe’s Chicken Fried Rice
These items have best-by dates ranging from February 2026 through August 2027.
Products sold nationwide
The affected foods were distributed in 43 states, including Rhode Island.
Only a small number of states were not impacted by the recall.
No injuries reported
Officials said there have been no reported injuries tied to the contamination.
However, the FDA advises anyone who believes they may have been affected to contact a healthcare provider.
What customers should do
Consumers are urged not to eat the recalled products. A full list can be found here.
Instead, they should throw them away or return them to the store where they were purchased.
