WARWICK, R.I. — A Central Falls man was taken into custody Thursday afternoon following a high-speed pursuit that began in Warwick and ended on I-95 north.
According to police, an officer attempted to stop 45-year-old Roberto Lopez on Post Road after observing signs of reckless driving. Lopez did not comply and instead sped off, prompting multiple officers to chase him through Post Road, Jefferson Boulevard and onto Interstate 95 North.
During the pursuit, Lopez’s vehicle suffered damage to two tires, causing him to lose control and collide with two Warwick police cruisers. Authorities said Lopez then exited the vehicle on the highway, fled on foot, and jumped a fence onto Wellington Avenue in Cranston, where officers apprehended him.
Lopez is facing multiple charges, including driving under the influence, eluding police, two counts of leaving the scene of an accident involving damage to an unattended vehicle, driving without a license, and obstructing an officer in the performance of duty. Police also said he was wanted on an extraditable warrant from Maine related to possession of a prohibited weapon.
