Reminder: Don’t forget to fall back for 2025 Daylight Saving Time.

Daylight saving time ends this Sunday November 2, at 2 a.m., so be sure to set your clocks back one hour before bedtime tonight. The good news is that we gain an extra hour of sleep! However, the bad news is that it will start to get dark in the late afternoon for the next few months. As we shift back to standard time, the days will feel shorter. Looking ahead, we’ll spring forward again on March 9.

2025 Daylight Saving Time

Daylight Saving Time (DST) has a long and complex history that dates back more than a century. The idea of adjusting clocks to make better use of daylight was first suggested by Benjamin Franklin in 1784 as a humorous way to save on candle use. However, the concept wasn’t officially adopted until World War I, when Germany and later other countries, including the United States, implemented it to conserve fuel. The U.S. first introduced DST in 1918, repealed it after the war, and then reinstated it during World War II for similar reasons. After the war, states and cities followed their own rules, creating widespread confusion until Congress passed the Uniform Time Act of 1966, which standardized the observance of DST nationwide while allowing states to opt out. Today, only Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe it. In 2005, the Energy Policy Act extended DST from March to November to promote energy savings and outdoor activity, though many studies have questioned its effectiveness. Now, debates continue over whether to make Daylight Saving Time permanent or abolish it entirely, as health and safety concerns have grown around the biannual clock changes.
