PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Authorities responded to a shooting incident at Brown University Saturday afternoon, prompting a heavy police and emergency presence on campus. Officials confirmed that a suspect opened fire, though no information has been released about injuries or victims.

News crews observed a large response along Thayer Street, where police vehicles and ambulances converged near the center of campus. Blood-stained clothing was visible on the sidewalk in the surrounding area.

The university initially provided an update that said a suspect was in custody however in a follow-up post, the university stated: “Police do not have a suspect in custody and continue to search for suspect(s).”

Earlier alerts warned of an active shooter reported near the Barus & Holley Engineering building at 184 Hope Street, which triggered the initial lockdown and emergency response.
