CUMBERLAND, R.I. — Cumberland police are investigating the death of an 18-year-old woman after she was found unresponsive inside her home over the weekend.
According to police, officers responded to a residence on East Barrows Street early Saturday morning for a report of an unresponsive female. Upon arrival, officers determined that 18-year-old Angelina Rocha, a resident of the home, had died.
Cumberland detectives, assisted by members of the Rhode Island State Police Crime Scene Unit, processed the scene throughout the weekend. Authorities have classified the case as a suspicious death and say the investigation remains active.
At this time, no arrests have been made and police have not released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding Rocha’s death.
In a statement, Cumberland Police Chief Matthew Benson extended his condolences to Rocha’s family, friends, and loved ones, calling the incident a tragic circumstance that remains under investigation.
Rocha was a student at Cumberland High School. School officials described her death as a heartbreaking loss for the school community and said counseling and support services are available for students and staff affected by the tragedy.
A GoFundMe campaign has also been established to help Angelina’s family with funeral and burial expenses. The fundraiser describes Angelina as a beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, and friend whose loss has left her family and loved ones devastated.
