Just weeks after losing three family members in a tragic shooting at a Pawtucket ice rink, a Rhode Island high school hockey player delivered an emotional moment on the ice.
Colin Dorgan scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway in double overtime, lifting the Blackstone Valley co-op hockey team to a dramatic 3–2 victory over Portsmouth and sending the team to the state championship game.
The victory comes weeks after a devastating shooting at Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket.
Dorgan was on the ice at the arena on February 16 when his father, Robert Dorgan, opened fire in the stands, killing his ex-wife, Rhonda Dorgan; their adult son, Aidan Dorgan; and his ex-father-in-law, Gerald Dorgan.
The tragedy stunned Rhode Island’s tight-knit hockey community and sparked an outpouring of support for Dorgan and his teammates.
Despite the unimaginable loss, Dorgan returned to the ice with the backing of his team and community. In the playoff matchup against Portsmouth, he broke free on a breakaway in double overtime and buried the game-winning goal, sealing the 3-2 win and sending Blackstone Valley to the Rhode Island Division II championship game.
Teammates rushed the ice to celebrate after the puck crossed the line, turning the moment into one of the most emotional scenes of the postseason as the team advanced to play for a state title.
