Brown University Health reinstates masking requirements

Due to a surge in flu and other respiratory virus cases across Rhode Island and Massachusetts, Brown University Health has moved to Respiratory Virus Status RED at all facilities, effective Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

Under Status RED, Level 2 surgical masks are required at all times for patients, visitors, and staff. Staff may also wear N95 masks when clinically appropriate. Masks will be provided to visitors upon arrival and to patients for use in their rooms.

Health officials say the move comes as hospitals see:
• Rising community transmission of respiratory viruses
• A high number of ER patients testing positive for viral infections
• Increased hospital admissions tied to respiratory illness, including hospital-acquired cases

Brown University Health is also urging the public to get a flu shot, wash hands often, cover coughs and sneezes, and stay home when sick. The system says it will continue monitoring conditions and adjust safety measures as needed.

Respiratory viruses often begin with mild, cold-like symptoms but can quickly progress, especially in children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Common signs include coughing, sneezing, sore throat, nasal congestion or runny nose, fever, chills, fatigue, body aches, and headaches. As the infection worsens, some people may experience shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, or difficulty breathing, which can signal more serious illness such as pneumonia or bronchitis. Gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea or diarrhea can also occur with certain viruses. Anyone who develops severe breathing problems, persistent high fever, confusion, or bluish lips or face should seek medical care immediately.
