PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Providence officials say the search for the suspect involved in the deadly shooting at Brown University remains active, as a person of interest previously taken into custody is to be released.
Authorities confirmed Sunday night that the individual detained earlier at a hotel in Coventry will not face charges and is no longer considered a person of interest. Officials emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
Police say surveillance footage showing a man dressed in all black remains the most significant lead in the case. The suspect was last seen leaving the building on foot. Investigators believe the individual is in his 20s, but his identity has not been released.
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said if there were clear video evidence identifying the suspect, it would already be public. Officials are asking those in the vicinity of the shooting to check their home cameras to see if they captured the suspect.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley acknowledged the anxiety surrounding the update but said authorities have not identified any credible or specific threats to the broader community. He reiterated that public safety conditions in Providence remain unchanged as the investigation continues.
