PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A violent confrontation erupted Tuesday evening in Providence, resulting in a gunshot and a person being struck by a vehicle, all captured on cellphone video.

Providence police were called to the area of Updike Street and Peace Street around 6 p.m. after reports of shots fired. When officers arrived, they found a man lying on the ground next to a wooden baseball bat. Several people on scene refused to provide details about what had happened.

Eventually, a witness told police that the injured person had been hit by a gray vehicle. Another witness reported hearing a gunshot just moments before the collision, possibly coming from a nearby parking lot.

Officers recovered a single shell casing during their search of the area.

A key piece of evidence came from a bystander who shared cellphone footage with investigators. The video reportedly shows a large fight breaking out in the parking lot, followed by an individual in a black hoodie and jeans firing a single shot toward the gray vehicle. Moments later, the vehicle can be seen striking the person on the ground.

The incident remains under investigation.
