SWANSEA, M.A. — A man wanted in connection with a deadly shooting in Cranston late Thursday night was later involved in a violent crash across the state line in Massachusetts, authorities said.
Cranston police reported that the victim was shot multiple times shortly after 9 p.m. at a home on Legion Way. Investigators believe the gunman knocked on the residence before opening fire when the door was answered. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Hours later, around midnight, law enforcement in Massachusetts located a vehicle believed to be tied to the homicide. Massachusetts State Police confirmed troopers attempted to follow the car but discontinued the pursuit.
Not long after, at approximately 12:30 a.m. Friday, the vehicle, identified as a white Infiniti, collided with an SUV at the intersection of Route 6 and Route 136 in Swansea. The impact caused the SUV to burst into flames.
Crews were able to put out the fire, and both damaged vehicles were removed from the scene several hours later. The crash forced road closures and reduced traffic to one lane in each direction until early morning.
Police said the suspect was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment and is now in custody. Authorities have not yet released additional details about the individuals involved in the crash or a possible motive in the shooting.
Cranston police continue to investigate the homicide, while Massachusetts State Police are handling the crash investigation.
