CRANSTON, R.I. — A Cranston man is facing charges after police say he failed to stop following a crash that killed a woman early Sunday morning.

Richard D’Amico, 30, of Cranston, turned himself in Sunday night and was subsequently charged with duty to stop in an accident resulting in death. The victim’s name is being withheld while officials work to notify the family.

According to investigators, an Amazon delivery driver called 911 around 4:15 a.m. after spotting a woman lying in the roadway on Scituate Avenue near Amy Drive. Officers arrived and found the woman suffering from what police described as “catastrophic injuries”. Emergency responders attempted to save her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators determined the woman had been struck while standing in the breakdown lane. Shortly after the woman was found, police say a resident approached officers and reported a conversation with D’Amico, who allegedly said he believed he may have hit a deer or another object while driving in the area.

Investigators later found a vehicle at D’Amico’s residence with damage and evidence that police say matched what was recovered at the crash site.

Authorities allege D’Amico did not stop after the crash and never contacted 911 or the police.

After a warrant was issued, D’Amico surrendered to Cranston Police Department Sunday night. He was arraigned and released on $5,000 surety bail. He is scheduled to return to court on April 1 for a pre-arraignment conference.

As the investigation remains ongoing, anyone with information is urged to contact Cranston police at (401) 942-2211 or text CRANSTONPD to 847411.
