CRANSTON, R.I. — Gunfire erupted just after 5 a.m. Monday near Woodbury Road off Broad Street. Police say someone opened fire on a black GMC before officers spotted it and tried to stop the driver. Instead, the chase sped into Providence, ending in a crash on Adelaide Avenue.

A man and woman were taken into custody. No one was hit by the gunfire, but there were minor injuries from the crash.

This latest case adds to a troubling stretch of violence in Cranston. Last week, Eduardo Loran Colon, 16, of Providence was shot and killed just before 3 a.m. on Dyer Avenue, leading to an arrest. While a July shooting in Garden City rattled one of the city’s busiest shopping areas. That shooting led to the arrest of two men.

Police say the investigation into this mornings incident is still active and more arrests are possible.
