WESTERLY, R.I. — Just before 9:00 a.m. yesterday morning, first responders were dispatched to Little Masachaug Pond off Atlantic Avenue for a water rescue after a dog fell through a thin layer of ice.
According to the Misquamicut Fire Department, a golden retriever named Phoenix was out for a morning walk with his owner when he wandered onto the pond and broke through the ice near the center. Misquamicut firefighters, along with the Westerly Ambulance Corps, Inc. and Westerly Police Department, responded quickly. The Watch Hill Fire Department was also called in for ice rescue equipment.
Crews located Phoenix struggling in the frigid water while his owner remained safely on shore. Firefighters from both departments entered the pond in ice rescue suits and successfully brought Phoenix back to shore. All rescuers were evaluated by EMS as a precaution and did not require treatment.
Fire officials are reminding the public that no ice is ever safe, and praised the fast response and teamwork that led to a successful rescue and a positive outcome for everyone involved.
