PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Monday night shooting on Interstate 95 in Providence sparked a multi-vehicle crash and sent several people to area hospitals, according to state police.

Rhode Island State Police say troopers responded to a crash on I-95 southbound near Smithfield Avenue around 8 p.m. Monday. When they arrived, investigators determined that gunfire had been exchanged between two vehicles moments before one of the cars crashed into a third.

One person suffered a gunshot wound that police described as non-life-threatening. Additional occupants involved in the crash sustained minor injuries and were transported to hospitals in Providence for treatment.

Multiple individuals fled the scene on foot following the crash. Police have not released any names and said no suspects or victims have been publicly identified at this time.

Authorities believe the people involved knew each other and emphasized there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the public, calling the incident isolated.

The investigation remains active, and police say more information will be released as it becomes available
