Rhode Islanders might want to dig out their shovels early this year. The Farmers’ Almanac is forecasting a cold and snowy winter across New England for the 2025–2026 season and Rhode Island is right in the path of what they call a “season of shivers.”
According to the long-range outlook, frequent snowstorms are expected in January and February, with the potential for several major systems to impact the state. The prediction also includes the possibility of snow before winter begins on December 21, 2025.
In December 2024, RIDOT reported six storms totaling 4.1 inches of snow and the use of 19,350 tons of salt.
The Almanac’s editors say residents should prepare for bitter temperatures, icy conditions, and plenty of winter precipitation. This includes a cold snap in January and another cold spell in February.
While the Farmers’ Almanac has a devoted following for its traditional weather predictions, federal forecasters are a bit more cautious. The National Weather Service and NOAA outlooks show “equal chances” for above- or below-average temperatures in New England this winter meaning Mother Nature could still swing either way.
Either way, Rhode Islanders can expect winter to make its presence known. Stock up on salt, check those snowblowers, and be ready for whatever the Ocean State skies have in store.
