SPRINGFIELD, M.A. — Former PC basketball star Billy Donovan and two-time NCAA championship coach at the University of Florida, was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday as part of the Class of 2025.
Donovan, now head coach of the Chicago Bulls, was honored for a career that has spanned over four decades as both a player and coach.
At the University of Florida, Donovan became one of the most successful college coaches of his era. Over 19 seasons, he compiled a 467–186 record, led the Gators to four Final Four appearances, and delivered back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007. His success elevated Florida basketball into a perennial powerhouse and cemented his reputation as one of the game’s brightest coaching minds.
Donovan’s basketball journey began at Providence College, where he starred as a guard under head coach Rick Pitino. He later played in the NBA before turning to coaching, building a career that has left a lasting mark on both the college and professional levels.
Joining Donovan in the Hall of Fame’s 2025 class were Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Sue Bird, Maya Moore, Sylvia Fowles, longtime NBA referee Danny Crawford, and Miami Heat owner Micky Arison. The 2008 U.S. Olympic “Redeem Team” was also honored.
In a full-circle moment, Donovan chose two of his most important mentors, Maurice Cheeks and Rick Pitino, to present him at the enshrinement ceremony.
Donovan now stands alongside other Friar greats enshrined in Springfield, including Lenny Wilkens, John Thompson, Dave Gavitt, and Rick Pitino.
