BOSTON — Rhode Island native and Bishop Hendricken High School graduate Joe Mazzulla signs a contract extension with the Boston Celtics. The terms of the contract have not been released, except for it being a multi-year deal.
Mazzulla, 37, has already etched his name in Celtics history, guiding the team to its 18th NBA championship in 2024, just his second season as head coach. That title run featured a dominant 16-3 playoff record and made him the youngest coach to win an NBA championship since Bill Russell in 1969.
The Johnston-born coach has averaged more than 60 wins per season since taking over in 2023, compiling a 182-64 regular-season record and a .660 postseason winning percentage. Before becoming head coach, his only previous head coaching experience came at Division II Fairmont State in West Virginia, bookended by assistant coaching jobs within the Celtics organization.
Off the court, Mazzulla remains connected to his home state. Just yesterday, he was in Providence for the groundbreaking of an early education center in the city’s main section, highlighting his ongoing involvement in local community initiatives.
Known for his disciplined approach and ability to bring out the best in stars like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, Mazzulla has become a respected figure both in Boston and Rhode Island. While the Celtics will be without Tatum for part of the upcoming season as he recovers from a torn Achilles, Mazzulla’s leadership will remain key in the team’s push for banner number 19.
The Rhode Island native was recently in his home state with star player Jayson Tatum attending the groundbreaking for a new early childhood education center in Providence’s Manton Heights neighborhood.
