PROVIDENCE, R.I. — MaxPreps recently released its list of the best high school athletic programs in the U.S. with La Salle Academy ranked 6th.
The rankings are based on an algorithm that considers state championships, state runner-up finishes, and placement in national rankings.
In 2022 they were ranked 2nd in the Nation by MaxPreps for All Around High School Sports Program.
The Rams have a lengthy list of championships across multiple sports with their most recent this spring when the boys lacrosse team defeated Moses Brown 8-6, extending their championship streak to 13.
Other notable moments in sports for the school include:
- Boys’ basketball: A 27–2 record, undefeated 16–0 in league, and ranked No. 1 in Rhode Island in the 2024-2025 season.
- Golf: Back to back championships in 2022 and 2013
- Girls’ soccer: five consecutive titles from 2001 to 2005
- Boys’ soccer: won every state championship from 2000 to 2005
- Football: 17 consecutive state titles in the 1930s and ’40s
Back in July, Survey company Niche released its list of the best high schools for athletes in the U.S., with Bishop Hendricken ranking 6th and La Salle Academy ranking 13th.
Niche’s rankings for that survey were based on Department of Education data, including statistics and millions of reviews from students and parents. They also considered state championships, athletic participation rates, and the number of sports offered.
La Salle Academy has a number of students who went on to have careers in professional sports:
- Nicolas Colaluca – Played soccer for New England Revolution and the Atlanta Silverbacks
- Liam Coen – Current head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, former offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Lou Gorman – American baseball executive, and the former general manager of the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners of Major League Baseball
- Matt Hansen – Played football for the Atlanta Falcons
- Joe Hassett – Played basketball for Providence College and the Seattle SuperSonics where he won an NBA championship
- Lou Lamoriello – Former New Jersey Devils’ long time general manager (won 3 Stanley cups)
- Davey Lopes – Played baseball for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros; first base coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers
- McKenzie Meehan – Played soccer for the Sky Blue FC and the North Carolina Courage
- Jo-Jo Morrissey – Played baseball for the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago White Sox
- Kyle Regnault – Played baseball for the New York Mets and San Diego Padres
