The very first May Breakfast took place in 1868 at Oak Lawn Community Baptist Church in Cranston. It was organized by a church women’s group as a spring fundraiser. It quickly caught on—and became a beloved community event throughout the Ocean State.
Rooted in old May Day celebrations, it was meant to bring people together after a long winter—and raise money for local churches. The menu? Classic New England comfort: scrambled eggs, ham, baked beans, johnnycakes, and plenty of homemade muffins.

Today, May Breakfasts are still hosted across Rhode Island every year, carrying on the legacy of faith, food, and community that started right here over 150 years ago.
