SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. — Heritage Restaurant Group confirmed it under contract to acquire Mews Tavern, a longtime fixture on Main Street in South Kingstown. The group says the tavern will remain open in its current location, with a focus on preserving the atmosphere and identity that have made it a local favorite.
Heritage Restaurant Group spokesperson Matt Lyons said the company exists to protect places like Mews Tavern, noting that as independent restaurants face increasing challenges, stepping in to help secure The Mews’ future aligns directly with the group’s mission.
Lyons emphasized that the acquisition is focused on preserving tradition rather than expanding a brand footprint, adding that the move is not about growth for its own sake. He said The Mews has long been a deeply rooted community gathering place, and the group’s responsibility is to honor that history, make thoughtful investments, and ensure it continues to serve South County for generations to come.
The sale is anticipated to close later this year, pending routine regulatory and contractual approvals.
Once finalized, Mews Tavern will join Heritage Restaurant Group’s expanding collection of Rhode Island establishments, which includes La Forge, Brick Alley Pub, The Red Parrot, Flo’s Clam Shacks, The Reef, Amano Pizza, Newport Craft Beer, La Costa Lobster and Tacos, Providence Coal Fired Pizza (both locations), Union Station Brewery, Wally’s Wieners, Olneyville New York System, and the former Old Canteen on Federal Hill, now rebranded as Wally’s.
