CRANSTON, R.I. — The City of Cranston’s Development Plan Review Committee has approved a proposal from Garden City Center’s owner, WS Development, for the Newport Creamery to be demolished after the restaurant’s lease expires in December 2026.
The plan, approved Wednesday morning, calls for tearing down the longtime restaurant and replacing it with a 23,500-square-foot retail building featuring at least seven storefronts.
The decision follows last month’s announcement that Newport Creamery’s lease would not be renewed. While potential tenants for the new space have not been disclosed, the project marks a major change for one of Garden City’s most recognizable sites.
Newport Creamery, a fixture at Garden City for more than 60 years, is exploring options to relocate within Cranston, though no new site has been confirmed. The regional chain currently operates eight locations in Rhode Island and two in Massachusetts.

- Seekonk – 701 Fall River Ave
