CRANSTON, R.I. — A Rhode Island staple is preparing to say goodbye to one of its most iconic restaurants. Newport Creamery announced that its Garden City location will officially close on December 28, 2025, ending a run that lasted more than six decades.
According to the company, the closure comes after WS Development chose not to renew the lease, leaving the longtime Cranston shop without a path to remain in the plaza.
The Garden City Newport Creamery has been a go-to spot for Awful Awfuls, family dinners, post-practice ice cream trips, and countless celebrations for generations of locals. The company says the decision to leave the space was not theirs and thanked customers for more than 60 years of memories.
Despite the shutdown, Newport Creamery emphasized that the company is not closing. All nine other locations across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts will remain open, including stores in Middletown, Warwick, Providence, Barrington, Coventry, Smithfield, North Kingstown, Fall River, and Seekonk.
Employees from the Cranston location are expected to be offered positions at other restaurants within the company.
Newport Creamery says it looks forward to continuing to serve Cranston-area customers at its nearby locations and carrying on the tradition Rhode Islanders have grown up with.
