FOXBORO, M.A. — The New England Patriots defeated the Houston Texans 28–16 on Sunday in the AFC Divisional Round, earning a trip to the AFC Championship Game for the first time since 2018.
Snow fell throughout the game at Gillette Stadium, but New England’s defense made the biggest impact. The Patriots intercepted Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud four times and forced five total turnovers, setting the tone from start to finish.
Carlton Davis III recorded two interceptions. Marcus Jones added a pick-six, and Craig Woodson also intercepted Stroud to help shut down Houston’s offense.
Patriots quarterback Drake Maye threw for 179 yards and three touchdowns. He connected with Demario Douglas, Stefon Diggs, and Kayshon Boutte, who caught a one-handed 32-yard touchdown that energized the crowd.
Houston struggled offensively while missing key playmakers, including top receiver Nico Collins and two starting tight ends. Stroud finished with 212 passing yards and one touchdown, but the interceptions proved costly.
The Texans cut the deficit to 21–16 in the second half, but New England pulled away late as the defense continued to apply pressure.
With the win, the Patriots advance to the AFC Championship Game, where they will face the Denver Broncos on the road next weekend.
Fun fact: The Patriots and Broncos last faced off in October 2020, with Cam Newton as quarterback for New England in an 18–12 defeat.
