PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Providence City Council has voted to phase out the use gas-powered leaf blowers, approving a full citywide ban by the year 2033. The ordinance, sponsored by Councilor Sue AnderBois (Ward 3), passed Thursday night with a 9-3-1-1 vote following months of public input and stakeholder discussions.
The measure was introduced in response to growing concerns over air pollution, noise, and worker safety caused by gas-powered landscaping equipment. Councilor AnderBois said the goal is to balance environmental and health benefits with the practical needs of local landscapers and small businesses.
“Our neighborhoods deserve a future without toxic gases and excessive noise,” AnderBois said. “This policy is a win for the health and well-being of our environment and our neighbors, while mitigating impacts on small business.”
Under the new ordinance, a seasonal restriction will begin in 2030, limiting the use of gas-powered leaf blowers between October 1 and December 15. By January 1, 2033, all use within Providence city limits will be permanently prohibited.
The ban aligns Providence with a growing number of cities nationwide that are moving toward cleaner, electric-powered landscaping tools as part of broader climate and public health initiatives.
