PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Providence College is welcoming one of its all-time greats back to campus. Former NBA forward and PC legend Ryan Gomes is officially joining the men’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant coach under head coach Kim English.

Gomes, a 2005 graduate of Providence, was a standout for the Friars from 2001 to 2005. During his collegiate career, he scored over 2,100 points, earned All-American honors. He was later drafted by the Boston Celtics and went on to play over seven seasons in the NBA with the Celtics, Timberwolves, and Clippers.

Now, he’s bringing that wealth of playing experience and Friar pride back to where it all began.

The hiring comes as Coach Kim English continues to build his staff with individuals who not only understand the game but also embody the culture and tradition of Friartown. Gomes has recently been active in player development and mentoring young athletes, making his transition into college coaching a natural fit.

Gomes is expected to play a key role in player development, recruiting, and continuing the Friars’ tradition of toughness and work ethic on and off the court.

Providence College’s men’s basketball team ended their 2024/2025 season 12-20 overall and 6-14 in the Big East.

Ryan Gomes had a successful NBA career, playing from 2005 to 2013. Drafted by the Boston Celtics in the second round, Gomes quickly established himself as a reliable forward. He spent time with several teams, including the Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Clippers, and Charlotte Bobcats. Known for his versatility, Gomes averaged 10 points and 5 rebounds per game during his best seasons. His work ethic and basketball IQ earned him respect across the league.

Providence College basketball has a rich history, dating back to 1920. The Friars have consistently been a competitive force in college basketball, earning numerous NCAA Tournament appearances. Notable achievements include winning the Big East Tournament in 1994 and making a memorable run to the Final Four in 1987. Over the years, the program has produced NBA talent, including Ryan Gomes and Lenny Wilkens. Under various coaches, Providence has built a reputation for tough, gritty play, and remains a respected program in the Big East Conference.
