PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Providence police have identified the woman killed in a shooting on Broad Street late Wednesday afternoon.
Officials say 29-year-old Morgan Lynn Boss, of Vernon, Connecticut, was found with a gunshot wound to the head around 5 p.m. outside 1003 Broad Street. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to investigators, a suspect is already in custody, and the case is now being treated as a homicide. Detectives say criminal charges are expected.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The Providence Police Department’s 2024 annual report showed violent crime dropped by about 10% from the previous year, driven in part by a 27% decrease in gun-related offenses. The department also removed 325 illegal firearms from city streets, and the number of shooting victims fell significantly from 54 in 2023 to 33 in 2024. Meanwhile, property crimes remain a major issue: Providence reported 3,212 property crime incidents in 2024, with larceny-theft making up the bulk of those cases.
Despite that drop in violence, Providence still ranks high compared to other Rhode Island cities with its total crime rate per 100,000 residents in 2024 was 1,935, the highest in the state. Much of the crime activity is concentrated in categories like robbery, aggravated assault, and motor vehicle theft.
