PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Hundreds of people filled the streets of Providence Monday night in a show of support for Los Angeles’ demonstrations against immigration raids.

Organizers said the local rally aimed to remain peaceful, gathering outside the Providence Federal Center to echo support for those protesting on the West Coast.

The demonstrations in L.A. prompted President Donald Trump to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops to the city, a move met with fierce opposition from state and local leaders.

California Attorney General announced Monday afternoon that the state plans to sue the Trump administration, arguing the use of the National Guard is unlawful.

In addition, U.S. Northern Command has mobilized 700 Marines to reinforce the Guard.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee joined other Democratic governors in signing a letter condemning the deployment.
