A rare nor’easter is forecasted to hit Rhode Island on Thursday, May 22, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and unusually cold temperatures for this time of year.

Forecasters say the system could dump 1 to 2 inches of rain across the state, with wind gusts reaching up to 50 mph along coastal areas. High temperatures are expected to stay in the upper 40s to low 50s—well below normal for late May.
The storm is part of a larger weather system affecting much of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, fueled by a strong jet stream and a surge of Arctic air

Travel could be impacted throughout the day, with slick roads, poor visibility, and possible delays at regional airports. Coastal flooding is also a concern during high tide, especially in low-lying areas.
Conditions are expected to improve by Friday, with drier and sunnier weather returning in time for Memorial Day weekend, although temperatures will remain cooler than usual.
Stay safe—and if you see flooding, storm damage, or anything unusual, send us your photos or video.
