The Rhode Island Department of Health has issued an overdose spike alert for Cumberland, Lincoln, Smithfield, and North Smithfield after a sharp rise in overdoses between August 26 and September 1.
These alerts are triggered when a city or region sees more non-fatal overdoses than usual in a single week. The last alert for this region was back in February 2025.
Health officials warn that fentanyl continues to dominate the drug supply and has been found not only in opioids but also in stimulants such as cocaine, crack, meth, and even counterfeit pills.
