Rhode Islanders can search here to find out if they have any unclaimed property.
Unclaimed property generally consists of abandoned financial assets, such as checking and savings accounts, unpaid wages, securities, life insurance payouts, uncashed checks, and proceeds from inactive safe deposit boxes. It does not include real estate or vehicles.
Organizations holding potential unclaimed property make every effort to contact the owner. This may involve online logins, written correspondence, deposits or withdrawals, or updating personal information. If these efforts do not result in activity, the asset is reported to the state in the owner’s last known location.
Unclaimed property laws in the United States were originally established as a consumer protection program. They have since evolved to protect both owners and their heirs. Once an asset is in the state’s custody, the unclaimed property program undertakes aggressive outreach through mailings, advertisements, and local media. The state will retain possession indefinitely until the rightful owner or heirs come forward to claim it.
