To identify the states with the most problematic road conditions, mapping company, eSpatial examined government records and live traffic data, assessing each state on five main criteria: congestion levels according to Numbeo’s Traffic Index, road satisfaction scores from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the volume of Google searches for “pothole complaint,” the total number of road fatalities, and the incidence of speeding-related deaths as reported by the Department of Transportation.
The worst offender? Rhode Island, followed by Massachusetts.
The report which was shared with Travel & Leisure, had Rhode Island ranked last overall for road quality, with only 62.76% of roads rated acceptable, and placed second-highest for speeding-related fatalities. Rhode Island also led the nation in pothole-related search complaints
Coming in third was Hawaii, followed by Maryland and Connecticut. Meanwhile, Montana was listed as the best place to drive.
