A new national study has ranked Rhode Island as the worst state in the country for summer road trips, placing 50th overall in WalletHub’s 2026 rankings.
The study compared all 50 states across 32 factors, including affordability, road safety, attractions, road quality, and the overall driving experience.
Rhode Island received an overall score of 37.66, ranking 48th for costs, 19th for safety, and 48th for activities. The report also found the Ocean State has one of the fewest scenic byways in the country, which contributed to its last-place finish.
Minnesota earned the top spot, followed by Utah and Louisiana. Among the New England states, Maine ranked highest at No. 7, while Massachusetts finished 44th, Vermont 45th, New Hampshire 41st, Connecticut 48th, and Rhode Island 50th.
