This week, a massive great white shark was spotted feeding on the carcass of a dead whale off the Rhode Island coast, creating one of the most remarkable marine wildlife encounters seen in local waters in recent memory.
According to the Atlantic Shark Institute, great white shark sightings off the Rhode Island are relatively uncommon. However, when a whale dies, it can quickly attract these apex predators as they take advantage of an important food source.
After receiving numerous reports from the public, the Institute’s team searched nearly 50 square miles before locating the drifting whale. Once they found it, they observed one enormous great white shark feeding on the carcass while another great white shark was also nearby looking for a meal.
The encounter was witnessed by the Atlantic Shark Institute’s Executive Director and Sarah Callan of Mystic Aquarium. The remarkable video was captured by Callum Crawford, who provided a rare look at one of the ocean’s most powerful predators feeding just off the Rhode Island coast.
